Elephant Eyelash is the the first studio album by indie hip hop group Why?. I haven’t really been following Why? much anymore, but I’ve always liked this album no matter how much time goes by. Elephant Eyelash isn’t mind blowing or anything, but it definitely has its moments. Why? blends indie rock and hip hop so nicely, particularly on this album, it immediately made me a fan. This is one of the few records that can make me feel like I’m listening to classic hip hop on one song and Modest Mouse on the next. Not only is the vibe of the music on point, but lead singer/rapper, Yoni Wolf’s lyrics are just as sweet to the ear. As I revisit this album, you should too! You can hear one of my favorite songs from high school, and favorite song on Elephant Eyelash called “Crushed Bones” at the top of this post.

Jack Ruby - “Untitled Instrumental” (2013)

Spirit If is the first and only solo album by Broken Social Scene front man Kevin Drew. Spirit If hardly even sounds like a solo project. For Broken Social Scene fans, it’s basically another Broken Social Scene album. The album includes a lot of Broken Social Scene members on it to create that signature BSS sound, with a more relaxed Kevin Drew vibe to it. When I first bought this album and heard it, I wasn’t a fan. After giving it another listen, I’d find myself giving it another listen, and then another, and another. What I’m trying to say is, Spirit If grows on you. If you enjoy anything by Broken Social Scenes and its members, I’m almost positive you’ll enjoy Spirit If. You can hear my favorite song on this album called “Farewell To The Pressure Kids” at the top of this post.

Brand Nubian - One For All (1990) (Elektra Records)

One For All...

Brand Nubian - One For All (1990) (Elektra Records)

One For All is the debut album by hip hop group Brand Nubian. I’ve grown to like this album so much because of its originality. MC Grand Puba and Sadat X have some of the wildest lyrics and deliveries I’ve heard yet. You can’t help but laugh during a lot of the tracks because some of the things these MC’s think of and say are too dope. After hearing this album again, I haven’t been able to write a rhyme without trying to sound like Puba for a month. It’s just that catchy! The style and originality on this album is just too cool. Brand Nubian has a style that’s so out there that you’re just going to have to listen to a song yourself to understand what I’m talking about. You can listen to the first song on this album called “All For One” at the top of this post. Peace to all my Native Tongues!

Joanna Newsom - Walnut Whales (2002) (Self-Released)

Walnut Whales is the self-distributed debut EP by Joanna Newsom. All but three of the tracks have been re-recorded, with slight alterations, for her well known debut full length album, The Milk Eyed Mender. Joanna Newsom has one of the most unique voices I’ve ever heard. It also helps that her lyrics are brilliant. From her lyrics and singing voice, to her harp playing, everything Joanna Newsom does musically is beautiful. Since the first time I’ve heard her she’s been one of my favorites. Walnut Whales is compassionate, powerful, and relatable. Joanna takes me away every listen. Each song forces me to relax and explore my imagination. It feels like I’m on a walk in a never ending park, surrounded by memories. Few artists do this to me, but she does it every time. You can listen to my favorite Joanna Newsom song, which is on Walnut Whales, titled “Erin” at the top of this post.

Al Green - Green Is Blues (1969) (Hi Records)

Green Is Blues is one of my favorite Al Green albums. As always Al Green is mad soulful. This album might feel a little more soulful because of the producer, Willie Mitchell. This was the first time the two worked together, and it definitely was not the last. They went on to make more classics than I can name, but this is where it all started. As a kid I stayed playing the Al Green Greatest Hits CD on repeat. Luckily I explored Al’s actual albums, and this was the first I heard. After hearing “One Woman,” (First track on Green Is Blues) I was blown away. Naturally the rest of the album just grew on me. Plus there are a few classic Hip-Hop samples hidden throughout this album (Wu). I suggest all the real music lovers go listen to this album, it’s a good one. You can hear one of my favorite Al Green songs called “One Woman” at the top of this post.

St. Vincent - Marry Me (2007) (Beggars Banquet Records)

Marry Me is the debut album by St. Vincent. When I first heard this I knew she was only going to get better, and she has. Marry Me is filled with mad potential and shows you a style you’ve never heard before. Annie Clarks guitar skills are unique and exquisite. All of the styles and instruments St. Vincent uses on this album are refreshing. You never know how a song is going to end because it changes up so dramatically and so often. It feels like Annie takes you on an adventure with each song she plays. Marry me is an enjoyable listen, and a great first album for St. Vincent. To get a taste of Annie Clarks crazy style check out the song called “Now, Now” from the album at the top of this post.

Show and A.G. - Goodfellas (1995)...

Show and A.G. - Goodfellas (1995) (Payday/FFRR Records)

Goodfellas is the second album by hip hop duo Show and A.G. If you’re looking for a raw hip hop album that represents skills, look no further. A.G. spits some of his nicest rhymes on this album. A.G. comes at you raw nonstop with one of the calmest and smoothest deliveries I’ve ever heard. What makes this album so unique is that most of the beats come hard, but not once does A.G. ever lose his cool. Trust me, it’s ill. Sometimes Goodfellas can be overlooked as an album because of its classic hit “Next Level (Nyte Time Mix),” but it’s easily Show and AG’s best album. You can listen to a song from Goodfellas called “You Know Now” at the top of this post.

Devendra Banhart - “The Good Red Road” (2005)...

Devendra Banhart - “The Good Red Road” (2005) (Troubleman Unlimited Records)

Jana Hunter / Devendra Banhart is a self-titled split album by both artists. The first five songs on the album are recorded by Jana Hunter, and the last five songs on the album are recorded by Devendra Banhart. The album was only released on LP by Troubleman Unlimited Records. Though Jana Hunter’s songs are all acoustic, her vocals are hypnotizing and make you a fan instantly. Devendra Banhart’s half of the album is more of the same. His unique voice and strange lyrics are always fun to hear. Devendra even ends the album by doing his own rendition of R. Kelly’s “Step in the Name of Love.” Overall this album is beautiful. It’s an easy 30 minute listen and it’s perfect to listen to while camping. Since this is a split album I’ll post a song by Jana Hunter in this post, and a song by Devendra Banhart in the next post. You can listen to the song “Black Haven” by Jana Hunter at the top of this post.

Lee Perry - Roast Fish, Collie Weed & Corn Bread (1978)...

Lee Perry - Roast Fish, Collie Weed & Corn Bread (1978) (Upsetter Records)

Roast Fish, Collie Weed & Corn Bread is the 1978 album by Lee “Scratch” Perry. This album was the first to consist entirely of songs sung all by Perry himself. This was the first Lee Perry album I ever heard, and now it’s my favorite album of his, so far. Back in the day when I knew nothing about reggae, I went into a record store and picked out this record, and a Burning Spear record. I walked up to the clerk and asked him which one I should purchase. He suggested the Lee Perry album, and it’s been a favorite ever since. I love this album so much because it doesn’t sound like a typical reggae record. Lee Perry gets extra experimental on this album by adding abstract noises to his songs (random background noises, drowning horns, a baby crying, a cow mooing, etc), bringing a fresh new perspective to reggae music. You can listen to a song on Roast Fish, Collie Weed & Corn Bread called “Soul Fire” at the top of this post.
